How sea turtles keep their legs warm


By having large arteries and veins closely bundled within their leg muscles, leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) can keep their limbs warm even in frigid waters, a new study suggests. Despite having a low metabolic rate, leatherbacks—the sole living species of turtle in a once larger group—have a core body temperature that ranges between 25°C to 27°C (about 77°F to 81°F).

 Muscles must stay warm to remain efficient, but that’s a challenge for these beasts because they often swim in near-freezing waters, either in cold regions of the world or deep below the sun-warmed surface. To figure out how the animals maintain muscle warmth, researchers dissected six turtles that had unfortunately drowned in fishing nets. Besides the layers of insulating fat, which scientists knew about already, the team noted the unusual pattern of major blood vessels within the turtles’ leg muscles. 

The blood vessels are arranged such that veins carrying blood back to the body’s core give up heat generated within the ever-active muscles to the blood coming from the heart in arteries, the researchers report online today in Biology Letters. That keeps most of the heat within the muscles and outside the body core—which is a big help for nesting females, the researchers note, because the strenuous activity of hauling out onto the beach and digging nests (image) could easily cause them to overheat. 

The unusual arrangement of arteries and veins in turtle muscles runs counter to examples noted in several species of warm-blooded aquatic creatures such as seabirds and mammals exposed to the same frigid environments: In the limbs of those animals, blood vessels are arranged such that body heat, which is largely generated in the liver, remains in the body core rather than being lost to the surrounding seawater.

Ants and bees have reputations as efficient team players. InTemnothorax rugatulus—a small brown ant found in pine forests in North America—division of labor is common, with workers specializing in tasks like foraging, building, and brood care. But new research shows that many ants in a colony seem to specialize in doing nothing at all. 

To get a closer look at how these ants filled their time, researchers marked every member of five lab-based colonies with dots of colored paint. Over the course of 2 weeks, a high-definition camera recorded 5-minute segments of the ants in action six times a day, capturing their behavior (or lack thereof). Out of the “workers,” 71.9% were inactive at least half the time, and 25.1% were never seen working.

 A small fraction of the ants, just 2.6%, were always active during observation, the researchers wrote last month in Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology. Previous studies have postulated that inactivity might be temporary, with ants working in shifts dictated by circadian rhythm. But the new results show that the lazy workers stay lazy no matter the time of day. 

According to the team, this suggests that inactivity isn’t merely a break between tasks, but might be an important part of the ants’ division of labor. Just what part remains unclear, but one theory is that the inactive ants are either too young or too old to work. Future studies over longer periods of time could capture the ants switching between busy and lazy modes.

48-million-year-old horse-like fetus discovered in Germany

A 48 million year-old horse-like equoid fetus has been discovered at the Messel pit near Frankfurt, Germany according to a study published October 7, 2015 in the open-access journal PLOS ONE by Jens Lorenz Franzen from Senckenberg Research Institute Frankfurt, Germany, and Naturhistorisches Museum Basel, Switzerland, and colleagues.

The authors of this study completed their investigation of the fetus from a 48 million year-old horse-like equoid uncovered near Frankfurt, Germany in 2000. They evaluated the bones and anatomy and used scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and high-resolution micro-x-ray to describe the ~12.5 cm fetus.
The fetus appears to be well-preserved, with almost all bones present and connected, except for the skull, which appears to have been crushed. The well-preserved condition of the fossil allowed the researchers to reconstruct the original appearance and position of the fetus. They estimate that the mare may have died shortly before birth, but don't believe the death was related to birth.
The authors also found preserved soft tissue, like the uteroplacenta and one broad uterine ligament, which may represent the earliest fossil record of the uterine system of a placental mammal. Applying SEM, the authors discovered a bacterial lawn replacing the soft tissues, as is common with other specimens found in that area. The observable details correspond largely with living mares, which lead the authors to posit that the reproductive system was already highly developed during the Paleocene, and possibly even earlier.

Ancient Roman Mosaic Found in Tuscany




Italian archaeologists digging in a small Tuscan village have unearthed part of what they believe is a large and impressive ancient Roman mosaic.

Laying in a private property next to a local road in the village Capraia e Limite, the mosaic features two different designs. One, dating to the second half of the 4th century AD, features geometric patterns framed by floral motifs, the other, dating to the 5th century AD, boasts octagons decorated with animals, flowers and a human bust.

The large mosaic graced the floor of a luxurious Roman villa that stood in the Tuscan countryside for four centuries, from the 1st to the beginning of the 6th century AD.

"Evidence of this villa was first found in 1983, when workers digging to build an orchard unearthed some black and white mosaic fragments and, most interestingly, an inscription mentioning one of the owners of the complex," Lorella Alderighi of the Archaeological Superintendency of Tuscany, told Discovery News.

The inscribed slab of stone referred to Vettius Agorius Praetextatus, one of the most famous pagan senators of the later fourth century AD. He came from an ancient and noble family and died in 384 while serving as the praetorian prefect at the court of Emperor Valentinian II.

It is well known that Vettius Agorius Praetextatus owned villas in Tuscany -- and liked them very much.

"The Roman statesman and orator Quintus Aurelius Symmachus even complained in his letters that Vettius enjoyed too much opium in his estates in Etruria, instead of dealing with politics in Rome," Federico Cantini, the archaeologist of the University of Pisa who led the dig, told Discovery News.

Built in the first century, the villa in Capraia e Limite had its most glorious time in the 4th century AD, when Vettius Agorius Praetextatus rebuilt it according to luxurious standards. By the beginning of the 6th century AD it was completely abandoned and plundered.

1500-Year-Old Mosaic Map Found

"Luckily, they could not remove the mosaics," Alderighi said.

Excavations in 2013 brought to light a stunning oval mosaic with a wild boar hunting scene which dates to the second half of the 4th century AD.

Because of legal issues and lack of funding, the mosaic was covered soon after its discovery in order to preserve it. The finding prompted new archaeological investigations.

"We speculated the mosaic floor extends further, thus we tested the hypothesis with a survey dig," Cantini said.

The excavation proved Cantini and his team were right.

Parts of two floor mosaics came to light. The older one consisted of geometric patterns framed by red decorations with acanthus and vine leaves in various shades of grey, blue and black. The other displayed scenes with animals, flowers, geometric patterns framed by octagons. Catching the attention at the center of one of such octagons, is the bust of a man with a tunic and large eyes.

"We believe it is not a portrait, but just a decoration," Alderighi said.

According to the archaeologists, the investigated portion of the villa had an hexagonal structure with rooms opening onto a central hall.

"We estimate the size of the floor mosaic to be about 300 square meters (984 square feet). We only have unearthed one-eighth of it," Cantini said.

Unfortunately, most of the mosaic lies beneath an industrial shed. Although the archaeologists believe the artwork is still intact, it is unlikely it will be brought to light in the near future.

The newly unearthed mosaics have been already covered for preservation -- just like the mosaic with the hunting scene.

"Our goal is to open these beautiful artworks to the public. We are working to make this happen," Alessandro Giunti, mayor of Capraia e Limite, said.

He added that the first mosaic to be restored and displayed will be the one showing the wild boar hunting scene.

Glass Walkway in China Cracks Beneath Tourists

Chinese news outlet People’s Daily reports that a falling thermos caused the walkway’s top layer of glass to shatter, prompting authorities to evacuate and shut down the structure.Glass bridges and walkways are taking China by storm, enticing tourists with a thrilling promenade and once-in-a-lifetime views.
Just last month, a 1,000-foot glass bridge that sits 600 feet above the ground opened in China’s Shiniuzhai National Geopark.

The drone that can plant trees

A British company is hoping to use drone technology in order to plant trees in areas that have been deforested.

BioCarbon Engineering recently spoke at the United Nations Solutions Summit about how the use of drones and 3D maps could help to plant trees in a cheaper and faster method than is usually done with traditional techniques.

BBC Click spoke to Martin Tengler of BioCarbon Engineering about how the technology works.


The drones can plant 36,000 seeds a day at a cost of just 15 percent of traditional methods, such as planting by hand. The company hopes to put their plans into action by the end of the year.

Of course, nothing combats deforestation like not doing it in the first place. But until we get better at that, these green machines will be soaring over new saplings

Orangutans released back into Borneo's rainforests, in pictures


An orangutan and her 18-month-old baby have been released back into Borneo's rainforests after they were rescued from an oil palm plantation


Ah Foo, 25, and her baby, Kebaco were rescued after a concerned farmer raised the alarm amid preparations for the harvest - which would have destroyed their home and put them in serious danger

The team took the mum and baby to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Malaysia to screen them for disease before being released to set up their new home amongst fellow great apes.


Doctor Laura Benedict, from Sarawak, East Malaysia, and her team at the Wildlife Rescue Unit sedated Ah Foo with tranquiliser for final medical checks and to take her baby away for safe transportation.


The pair were kept under observation for a few months before they were given the all-clear to be moved to their new home

On arrival at the chosen tree, nervous Kebaco had to be coaxed from her cage, whereas Ah Foo bolted into the foliage, knocking her baby from the tree in her haste. However after acclimatising herself to her new surroundings, she collected Kebaco and built a nest for her sleepy baby to snuggle up for an afternoon nap.
Doctor Benedict, who was present at the release, said: "When we first released them the mother actually straight away went up the tree leaving the baby behind. But after we left for about an hour she claimed back the baby from where we left her.
"This is the end of the operation for these particular orangutans but this will not end here. I'm hoping that both of them will continue to survive in the wild."

China creates gene-edited ‘micropigs’ to satisfy an emerging fringe pet market



By nearly any measure, the Beijing Genomics Institute in Shenzhen is the premier genetics powerhouse. In 2010, for example, their 500-node supercomputer was processing and analyzing over 10 terabytes of raw sequencing data every 24 hours. They now produce a quarter of the worlds genomic data, dwarfing the output of places like Harvard and the NIH. Whether BGI is also the undisputed champion at turning this data glut into useful knowledge, on the other hand, is perhaps a matter of opinion.
recent report in Nature hints at a tantalizing new creation that BGI is set to unleash on the open market: Made-to-order, programmable “micropigs.” Although the pigs were developed by simply knocking out a receptor for growth hormones using well-established TALEN gene-editing techniques, creating radically modified body morphologies without compromising some essential physiology may be more of a challenge. The law of unintended consequences becomes all the more acute when you are simultaneously tinkering with other critical design features, like the major pigment pathways. To that point, BGU will be offering custom pets in a rainbow of colors, with the base model starting at 10,000 yuan (US$1,600).

When you consider that oversupply of just one of the pigments we know about, the pheomelanin of redheads, predisposes them to a whole suite of unique characteristics, we may have cause for concern. For example, there are ample reports in the dental literature that gingers are much more insensitive to anesthetics like novocaine. This is particularly intriguing if you consider that one of the more persuasive new arguments for how anesthetics work is through increases in electron spin content. What are the main bearers of electron spin you might ask? It seems that the answer is mainly pigments, both in the body, and in the brain.
Many are familiar with what happens when you have too much growth hormone action: You generally get a host of new phenomena perhaps best summarized as professional wresting. While features like gigantism and acromegaly may be obvious on the upside of the GH spectrum, the downside, where there is not enough, seems to be a bit more subtle. As in many things where raw technical considerations are inextricable from the larger social and the ethical eventualities, discussions on Twitter have recently been at the fore. For example, in the general pipeline of emerging scientific understanding, we now know that the overall hierarchy (at least in genetics) can be established as follows: data > knowledge > wisdom > bacon.
Although the micropigs are tiny (they weigh in around 30 pounds), sooner or later, somewhere, somebody is going to find out what they taste like. When that happens there may no end to ways to try to enrich various bacony furans, methylpyrazines, and methylpyridines in specific cuts. We should probably bear in mind that the field of pig genetics has been getting a lot of attention recently. This is due, among other things, to the many anatomic and physiologic similarities shared with humans.
Most recently, a genome-wide comparison of common repeat sequences (known as transposons) found in primates and pigs has indicated that the two clades are much more closely related than had formerly been appreciated. With the obvious horrors of factory farming aside, the fetishization of these animals not just for pets, but for food is a clear and present concern.
Belgian
Without certain controls imposed by collectively enlightened minds things like the thoughtless bear bile industry, or the live turtle neckless culture, can thrive unquestioned. These gene-edited micropigs are not even one-step beyond anything we have already seen. In fact they are par for the course with much that we already now accept. The genetic sleight-of-hand used to create the famous Belgian Blues seen in the image above is not limited to creating supercows. In fact, hypermuscled pigs with the same ‘myostatin’ gene knockout reported earlier this summer. In the case of these myostatin animals, both copies of the gene were knocked out. While it is not yet proven, crippling just one of the genes would be expected to create an animal with more intermediate features.
In the case of the mini-pigs, this is exactly what has been done. To clone their pigs, BGI first edited cells obtained from a fetus of the Bama pig species. Male clones established in this way were then bred with normal females to make more pigs with just one good receptor. On the research side, it has been reported that the pigs would be useful in various studies of things like the gut microbiota, stem cells and human dwarfism. For the latter, particularly the variety known as Laron syndrome, the human version of the growth hormone receptor has certain mutations or substitutions.
These ‘side benefits’ of the work may be legitimate pursuits. However, we are not going to offer them here as any type of endorsement for this work. It is a very short hop from what is now widely being touted as “adorable” to what can only be seen as “deplorable.” That said, new gene editing techniques based on variations of the so-called CRISPR method are probably the most exciting, and potentially useful technology we might now avail ourselves of.

NASA releases stunning new photo of Pluto’s moon Charon




New Horizons has put Pluto in its rear-view mirror, but NASA still has many gigabytes of data to download from the probe. As the images and readings trickle back, we’re gaining agreater understanding of the former ninth planet, but also of its moons. The latest image to be released by NASA shows Pluto’s largest moon Charon, and it’s much more lumpy and uneven than you probably expected.

During its flyby of the Pluto system, New Horizons got within 17,000 miles (27,000km) of Charon. This object is about 600 miles in diameter and is massive enough that it actually forms a binary system with Pluto — they both orbit around a single barycenter near Pluto. The images we had of Pluto before the New Horizons mission were not great, but Charon was even more mysterious. The newly released photo reveals a plethora of fascinating geological features, though.

Charon’s surface turns out to be very irregular with mountains, craters, and a giant 1000 mile-long canyon stretching across the middle. It’s four times longer than the grand canyon, and that’s just the part of it we can see. New Horizons was just doing a flyby of the Pluto system, so it didn’t get a look at the other side of the moon. NASA researchers have entertained the possibility that the network of canyons stretches all the way around the planet.

The plains south of the canyons are remarkably smooth compared to the craggy, pockmarked surface to the north. Scientists say this indicates significant resurfacing of Charon has occurred in the not-too-distant past. So like Pluto, it might be more geologically active than we thought. The likelihood of seeing so much geological activity on a small moon at the edge of the solar system was seen as very unlikely.

The reason for this radical remodeling of the surface could be due to volcanic activity, but NASA seems more interested in the possibility of cryovolcanism. An internal water ocean may have frozen in the past and resulted in changes in volume and mass distribution could have led to the surface cracking open and the formation of mountainous features.

We might learn more about the nature of Charon in the coming months. There is even higher-resolution Charon data still sitting in New Horizons, but it’s going to take months to get all that data back to Earth. The data link between NASA and the probe only runs at 1-2Kbps. In the meantime, NASA is looking at where to send New Horizons next. It has enough fuel left to take a closer look at another Kuiper Belt object. Maybe we’ll find more evidence out there to help unravel the mysteries of Charon.

India Pledges to Reduce Carbon Emissions 33%-35% by 2030




India filed its climate action plan at the U.N. Climate Secretariat in Germany’s Bonn Thursday, becoming one of the last major global economies to release its goals for tackling climate change ahead of December’s landmark Paris Climate Conference.

In the document, known as the Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs), the Indian government said it would reduce carbon emissions relative to its GDP by 33% to 35% from 2005 levels by 2030, reports the Associated Press. India also pledged that 40% of the country’s electricity would come from non-fossil fuel-based sources, such as wind and solar power, by 2030.

All of the 190 countries participating in the COP21 talks in Paris are expected to publish INDCs, which list each country’s carbon emission reduction goals. The targets are intended to hold nations accountable to preventing global temperatures from rising by more than 2ºC. Scientists say that temperatures must stop rising soon to prevent catastrophic harm to the planet.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi hopes that investments in solar power will bring reliable electricity to an additional 300 million Indians, the Economic Times reports.

Mahatma Gandhi’s famous pronouncement, “Earth has enough resources to meet people’s needs, but will never have enough to satisfy people’s greed,” inspired India’s climate commitments, according the document.

India is the world’s third largest carbon emitter, behind the U.S. and China.

Eighty-six countries have drafted INDCs to date ahead of the conference, according to the Climate Group.
